Could you help us get closer to the community?

‘Community based, nationally acclaimed’ is a line that neatly sums up much of what New Sussex Opera is about – and what we’ve achieved. But, encouraged by our latest schools workshop, we’re determined to do more – much more. It’s a strategically important task – which is why we’re looking for someone to be our first dedicated (in every sense of the word) Community Engagement Manager.

It’s education, but it’s more than education: it’s integral to our remit and mission and critical to our status as a charity. But the objectives are clear – to build relationships with schools and colleges to get them to participate in a variety of activities, including future performances. But why stop at just schools and colleges? There’s a great opportunity to develop fresh and original approaches to other sectors of our community. And that includes our own NSO community, because as well as the obvious outreach programmes, we’re also talking about education for our own members to help them develop additional skills which will enhance our ability to stage brilliant performances.

We need someone who is fully DBS checked and who is confident and credible when working with children and young people. This suggests a background in teaching (ideally with a bias towards music and the arts) or in some aspect of education management. In terms of personal qualities, we’re looking for an ideas person whose creativity and enthusiasm are infectious, but with the practical skills to make those ideas a reality.
